Summer is a popular time for Waco families to visit swimming pools, parks, and other recreational areas. Many people also travel or take part in outdoor activities across Texas. According to data from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), nearly two million Americans were injured during summer activities in a single year.
Earlier reports provide insight into how these injuries most often occur.
Bicycle Accidents Lead Summer Injuries
Bicycle riding is one of the leading causes of summer injuries. In one year alone, more than 550,000 people were hurt while riding bikes. Many of these injuries could have been prevented.
According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by up to 85%. Unfortunately, many cyclists fail to take this simple precaution.
Sports-Related Injuries at Fields and Courts
Softball and baseball fields accounted for the second-highest number of injuries. Approximately 261,000 people were injured at these venues in one year. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons reports that most injuries resulted from unintentional contact.
In addition, some injuries occurred because players failed to stretch or warm up properly before playing.
Playground Injuries and Equipment Hazards
Playgrounds also pose significant risks during the summer months. At least 244,000 people were injured on playgrounds in one year. About 70% of these injuries resulted from falls or faulty equipment.
Emergency room physicians stress the importance of parental supervision. Parents should watch for broken equipment, loose bolts, and rusty nails.
ATV, Mini Bike, and Moped Accidents
Mini bikes, all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), and mopeds caused more than 221,000 injuries in one year. The CPSC has repeatedly warned about the dangers of children under 16 operating these vehicles.
Riding with passengers and using ATVs on paved roads also increases the risk of serious injury. Notably, Texas recorded one of the highest numbers of ATV-related fatalities that year.
Other Common Summer Injury Locations
Additional injuries occurred on soccer fields, trampolines, volleyball courts, amusement parks, and swimming areas. Pools and natural bodies of water remain especially dangerous without proper supervision.
What to Do After a Summer Injury
Property owners must take reasonable steps to keep their premises safe, particularly when expecting large numbers of visitors. When they fail to do so, injured individuals may have legal options.
If you are injured this summer, seek medical care immediately. Afterward, consider speaking with a Waco premises liability attorney. An attorney can review your case and determine whether you may qualify for compensation for your injuries.
