Be weary of unsecured roadside signs on the highway

A freak incident claimed the life of a 55-year-old Mansfield man while he and his female companion were riding down Interstate 35 (I-35) in Waco on the morning of Oct. 22.

The decedent and his unidentified female companion had been traveling southbound along I-35 just before 10:20 a.m. that day. They had recently passed its intersection with U.S. Highway 84 when a motorist driving a sports utility vehicle (SUV) attempted to merge in front of them. The SUV's driver struck a nearby sign as they tried to pass. It landed in the middle of the roadway as a result.

Another motorist driving a pickup truck fast approached and ran over the sign. A representative with the Texas Department of Public Safety noted the force with which the pickup driver drove over the sign caused it to go flying in the air. It ultimately came to rest in the front windshield of the Ford Focus. The passenger in that vehicle was struck by the metal pole and died instantly from his injuries. The car's driver was left unscathed.

Crash scene investigators ended up spending the remainder of the morning into the early afternoon that fateful Friday trying to make sense of what caused the crash. They left both I-35 and U.S. Highway 84 closed as they did this.

Most car crashes involve two motorists, one who is struck by another while both are going about their business. Injured parties often file suit against the negligent driver that caused the crash to recover compensation in their case. Liability may not be as easy to determine in freak accidents like the one that claimed this man's life though. Even still, his loved ones may be entitled to file a wrongful death lawsuit.

A car accidents attorney will want to learn more details about the events leading up to your I-35 crash. It's only then that your lawyer can advise you if you're entitled to compensation for car accident injuries here in Texas.
